When writer Augusten Burroughs read Role Models, John Waters’s new memoir about the people who inspired him, he said: “How did somebody from a quiet Baltimore neighborhood grow up to become the outlandish, brilliant, and insane John Waters? Two words: Johnny Mathis.” Yes, the traditional crooner of standards is one of the personalities Waters says made him the original that he is; in Role Models, Waters also nods to Tennessee Williams, Saint Catherine of Siena, and Esther Martin, owner of the “scariest” bar in Baltimore.
