Nightlife reaches a feverish pitch during the fall season, with club nights popping up left and right. Some of them vanish overnight, but the rest conquer the competition with fearless lineups and music. Take a peek.

GBH

Fridays

Now two years old and one of the city’s longest-running nights, GBH (Great British House) actually features more U.S.-born-and-bred house music than the name implies. Though the U.K.’s Miss Moneypenny’s stopping by for a first-time visit to Gotham (September 15), local man-about-town (all right, he’s from New Jersey) Tony Humphries comes out October 6. This month starts the monthly Garage City, with DJs Bobby and Steve, of KISS FM’s Saturday Night Zoo fame, bringing London vibes to NYC (September 22). London mate Terry Farley plays the end-of-the-month shindig (September 29).

GIANT STEP MONDAYS

Start the week with the perennially cool Giant Step crew, who just celebrated their 10-year anniversary last month. Known for presenting the most eclectic music in New York’s underground scene, Giant Step serve up weekly helpings of their sweetness at Shine—a perfect venue for their sophisticated music. Resident jock?local legend Ron Trent holds court with this month’s guests: U.K. DJ Russ Dewbery (September 11), Rainer Truby (October 9), and Peter Kruder, tentatively scheduled for September 18. Other Giant Step shows in the works include d’n’b minimalist Photek (September 26 at Centro-fly), live performances from Carl Craig and Moodymann (September 30 at Irving Plaza), and smooth operators Thievery Corporation (October 5 at Irving Plaza).

PHYSICS

Fridays

Limelight, 660 Sixth Avenue, 946-1998

Though there’s some drum’n’bass to be had almost every night of the week in NYC, Physics is consistently on point, and looking to get even bigger and better with its new digs. Now housed in two side rooms at the Limelight (with its own separate entrance), Physics residents Roy Dank, Blueline, Quartz, and 4 Real hold court in the larger arena, while Brennan Green presides over the house-y festivities in the other.

You know a place has used up all its cool-club points when it starts attracting chicks in cowboy hats and cutoff denim skirts, but we’ll forgive the Plant folks, only ’cause they manage to collect such a nice assortment of house-music DJs. This month: post-new-wave-disco-house from Jacques Lu Cont (September 16), Philly’s Nigel Richards (Septem-ber 9), hard house and funky breaks courtesy of D.C.’s Scott Henry (September 23), and resident DJ Roger (the “S-Man” to you) Sanchez returns on September 30 for his regular gig.

SLEAZE FACTOR

Mondays

The only tech-house event in the city keeps it coming, with a nice selection of local and international jocks that go deep on a weekly basis. Past guests have included ex-Shamen?turned? tech-house jock Mr. C, wicked and wacky tech-house duo Swayzak, and the man with the illest ambient collection on planet earth, Mixmaster Morris. Residents Adam Goldstone and Brian Walters join upcoming guests. Now if someone could just explain what “micro-house” is.

TWILO FRIDAYS

New York’s premier superclub boasts the biggest DJs in the northern hemisphere—and those are just its residents, never mind its special guests. This month, German trance cover boy Paul Van Dyk graces the decks (September 8) for his regular spot, as do Sasha and Digweed at their end-of-the-month shindig (September 29). But what’ll really get your panties in a bunch is the return of Richie Hawtin, who’s playing a special Plus 8 old-skool set in the main room (September 22). New residents Groove Armada return for their bimonthly residency (October 4), and Deep Dish get scary on Friday, October 13. And don’t forget Respect Is Burning (see below).

N’ICE TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The N’ice folks—always dedicated to bringing quality house music to NYC—are turning two. To celebrate, they’re bringing in Detroit techno guru Carl Craig of Planet-E fame. Also on the bill: N’ice residents A.Gram and Shauna Slevin, and the city’s best-kept secret, Thomas, transplanted here from San Fran’s Wicked crew.

RESPECT IS BURNING

Anything with Chez Music’s Neil Aline’s name attached to it is a guaranteed go—including his New York version of Respect Is Burning, which is dedicated to deep house (not all of it French, mind you). This month, Aline presents Detroit’s Stacey Pullen and Germany’s Ian Pooley, two techno masters at work. They’re joined by Kerry Chandler and Pepe Bradock. Also on Aline’s agenda: San Fran’s Naked Music DJ Miguel Migs hits NYC for a debut appearance in the third installment of On the Rocks. Mr. Aline, himself a resident, and co-jock Matthias Heilbronn set the tone (September 29 at Centro-fly).

NYC’s premier rave promotion crew, Stuck on Earth, bring back their annual pre-Halloween bash. This year’s tentative lineup is stellar as always, with Bad Boy Bill, Sandra Collins, Derrick May, Charles Feelgood, Scott Henry, Frankie Bones, KRS One, and Craze hitting the main arena. In the drum’n’bass tent: the Renegade Hardware Tour featuring Ink, plus Ray Keith, Bad Company, DB, Reid Speed, Kech, and TC Izlam. Buses will be available for city kids.
