One ancestor, Richard Henry Lee, was President of the Continental Congress and signatory of the Declaration of Independence, and another, Bushrod Washington, was a Supreme Court Justice of the United States. And, of course, Ashton’s great uncle, several generations removed, was the first President of the United States.

After graduating from UC Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in History, Ashton attended the Pepperdine University School of Law and earned a Juris Doctor. He passed the California Bar on his first attempt and became an associate attorney at the Montgomery Street, San Francisco, PI firm, the Law Offices of Arnold Laub. This job put him in close proximity to the renowned trial lawyer Melvin M.
