In the ongoing discussion about health and diet in this country, the topic of food deserts is a hot one. A new film approaches the subject from the perspective of five fruit and vegetable pushcart vendors who work in neighborhoods tagged food deserts. The Apple Pushers is as much a story about being an immigrant entrepreneur in New York as it is about these vendors’ role in the fight against diabetes and heart disease, which are rampant in the low-income neighborhoods they serve.
