Originally to focus primarily on Daniel Ellsberg, Peter Davis’s documentary essay ultimately expanded to encompass the Vietnam war’s origins in America and its prosecution on the ground. It took an Oscar to get the movie opened in the spring of 1975; five weeks later, Saigon fell to the VC and the war’s end merged with its most complete cinematic representation.
