Sludge-metal literati Isis loosely based their 2004 album, Panopticon, on the writings of French philosopher Michel Foucault; author Mark Z. Danielewski’s trippy novel House of Leaves inspired songs on their 2006 disc, In the Absence of Truth; and the band’s frontman, Aaron Turner, has yet to talk openly about what inspired their latest album, Wavering Radiant. Luckily, the onetime Tool tourmates have the musical savoir-faire to match Turner’s lyrics in a way that’s almost always captivating. Chicago instrumental quartet Pelican play just-as-crafty post-hardcore which, in their heavier moments, inspire spiritual moshing. With Tombs.
