As a self-taught artist, what advice would you give to aspiring artists who may be contemplating a similar transition or seeking to establish themselves in the art world?
RADHIKA GUPTA-BUCKLEY: For those that take flight, I’ve two pieces of advice: Firstly, exercise patience, as breaking into this industry can be challenging. Secondly, take the reins in promoting yourself—building your online brand is crucial. It’s a journey of embracing individuality, challenging norms, and proactively shaping your narrative.
Moving to New York City has played a significant role in shaping your artistic identity. How has the city influenced your perspective, and in what ways does it manifest in your latest creations?
Over the past few years, I’ve undergone significant personal growth, and this transformative journey is intricately woven into my art. A crucial milestone in this evolution has been my five-year experience in New York, leaving an enduring imprint on my creative identity.
While the fundamental narrative of my work remains the same, the city has infused it with a heightened, more distinctive perspective. It goes beyond mere recognition of my surroundings; there’s a keen awareness of the specific vantage point from which I observe and create—my studio in the heart of Soho. The city’s energy, diversity, and dynamic atmosphere have become integral elements that breathe life into my latest artistic endeavors.

What is one of your favorite art pieces you have created, and why?
One of my most cherished pieces is “Birth & Rebirth,” a painting I made last year. It serves as a visual narrative of my journey into motherhood, seeking to reveal the unvarnished reality, emotions, and sentiments universally shared by new mothers. Aptly titled to encapsulate the dual nature of pregnancy and maternity, it delves into the intricate layers of being a new mom, contemplating concerns for my child’s welfare in a world that is simultaneously beautiful and uncertain.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years in your work?
As a painter, the constant evolution is a captivating aspect. While I harbor aspirations for my work to be showcased in specific galleries in the next decade, my current focus is on savoring and immersing myself in the creative process. As cliche as this may sound, I try to embrace the unfolding path, acknowledging that the beauty lies not just in the destination but also in the ongoing exploration and refinement of my craft.

To ensure the cultural authenticity of my work while resonating with a diverse, global audience, I remain committed to exploring the status of women and men within the contemporary socio-political climate. My paintings are infused with elements of humor, sexuality, and empowerment, offering a nuanced perspective that transcends cultural boundaries.
