Mini Hot Dogs Hit Manhattan

by

Yes, after 90 years, the mini hot dog has finally arrived at Union Square — but without Zippy Sauce.

I’m a big fan of the tiny hot dogs found almost exclusively in the Albany area, and have been known to travel to places like Troy, Cohoes, and Schenectady, New York just for a taste. These miniature franks are approximately three inches in length, and if you think they’re cute, wait till you see the buns made just the right size to go with them.

At Famous Lunch in Troy, New York, the franks are typically dressed with mustard, chopped raw onions, and Zippy Sauce, which is something like Greek chile-con-carne.

These hot dogs may have originated in Vienna rather than Frankfurt, and are hence “wieners” rather than “frankfurters.” Either way, a version made by Nathan’s Famous recently appeared at the Regal Union Square Stadium 14 at the concessions counter. The price is $10 for four, which is not a bad price for a movie theater. There’s no Zippy Sauce, however, only ketchup, mustard, and pickle relish, in little plastic packs.

The tiny hot dogs down here are not quite as good, more beefy than veal-y. Still, even with the movie admission price, it may be cheaper to get them here rather than going up to the Albany area.
