In 2008, Michael Ian Black told us what makes him tick with My Custom Van: And Other 50 Mind-Blowing Essays That Will Blow Your Mind All Over Your Face, a collection of hilarious treatises on topics including taco parties, erotic fiction, and getting a perm in sixth grade. Two years later, theater group Project: Theater has adapted Black’s deeply strange musings to the stage. Part tribute to Black—who was a cast member of cult-favorite MTV sketch comedy show The State, and who is part of comedy troupe Stella—and part glimpse inside the man-child neuroses of the American, thirtysomething male, My Custom Van features eight actors performing 15 chapters from the book. Though Black is not actually in the show, the troupe has apparently asked him to be a guest of honor. Keep your eyes peeled when the play debuts tonight.
