Marlene Dietrich, Winston Churchill, Paul Robeson, Eugene O’Neill — those are just a few of the famous subjects Edward Steichen captured with his camera as Condé Nast’s chief photographer from 1923 to 1937. The Whitney’s new exhibition, “Edward Steichen in the 1920s and 1930s: A Recent Acquisition,” brings together 45 works from that period, including celebrity portraits and fashion photographs taken for Vanity Fair and Vogue as well as photos for advertising campaigns and those that showcase his love of the natural world. A true pioneer, his experiments with light and form and modern sensibility continue to influence photography — especially fashion photography — today.
