SWEET LIFE

by

Upon the release of his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, in February of last year, few knew much about Frank Ocean. With a few Google searches, you might find that he was a disgruntled Def Jam employee, affiliated with Odd Future, and the writer of songs such as Justin Bieber’s “Bigger” and John Legend’s “Quickly.” Contrast that with this month’s Channel Orange, the debut album that sold more than 100,000 copies in its first week, a fully realized, intensely anticipated 54 minutes of warm but apprehensive r&b jams. Tonight, the anticipation turns to Ocean’s sold-out Terminal 5 show, the only New York gig on this leg of his tour.
