If there’s one thing regrettable about Afrika Bambaataa’s legacy, it’s the way that — for many — it has been reduced to one or two songs, namely “Planet Rock” and “Looking For a Perfect Beat,” jammers that were not only important for hip-hop, but also set off 30-plus years of dance and electro. As a leader, he formed the Universal Zulu Nation, and as a party-starter, he rocked some of the best of his time. A few naysayers coming out of Red Bull’s recent United States of Bass event suggested he might have lost his touch over the years, but even if that is true, fear not: Opener Cosmo Baker, formerly of The Rub, is worth the price of admission alone.
