at the John Varvatos boutique where
CBGB’s once was to know that things aren’t what they used to be in the East
Village. To explore the area’s rich history and gentrified present, the Obie-winning Metropolitan Playhouse presents its fourth annual East Side Stories, four different nights of new plays and solo shows set in the once bohemian-friendly neighborhood. Plays include Delicacy, about a young woman’s fantastical dream of
life on the L.E.S., by the Voice’s former “Shelter” columnist Toni Schlesinger, and
They Come and Come, an immigrant story set in the 1920s, by John J. Kelly. The
festival, which also includes an art show, wraps on May 5 with a panel discussion about the neighborhood’s changing
identity.
