After directing the experimental theater troupe the Wooster Group in Eugene O’Neill’s Early Plays at the beginning of the year, Richard Maxwell returns to his own work with a new musical play, Neutral Hero. Using a dozen characters, Maxwell and the New York City Players tell the story of a young man’s search for his father in the American landscape, incorporating text, movement, and music. According to a piece in The New York Times, Maxwell wanted to make his protagonist as “neutral” as possible to explore his reputation with critics who have “described his work as deadpan, his performers intentionally robotic.” Will it compute?
