The Myth of Lesbian Bed Death

Women in long-term relationships get it on as much as other couples—or not

So, sorry, Pepper, but lesbians have just as much—or as little—sex as any couple in a long-term relationship. Which is to say, not nearly as much as they used to, but a lot more than your study maintained. “We must let go of those rigid ideas of what makes a healthy, functional, successful relationship,” Taormino says. “Every person has different needs and wants, and what works for one is not going to work for others. We need to talk openly about our sexual desires, practices, needs, and fantasies rather than continuing to let this bizarre myth rule our sex lives.”

Perhaps the myth has to do with the prevalence during the 70's and 80's of political lesbians? Given that a segment of the lesbian community was not only not interested in sex with women - but actively hostile to the idea that lesbians would have sexual relationships - it would seem that at that time there was a basis for that view. When you have individuals like  Sheila Jeffreys as community leaders pushing a community towards neo-Victorian values (and her friends smashing up lesbian bars and the patrons for having the wrong type of lesbian sex) it creates an environment hostile to healthy sexuality. Luckily the community has started to move on, but certainly during the early 80's the lesbian community was not exactly pro sex
