Perhaps the myth has to do with the prevalence during the 70's and 80's of political lesbians? Given that a segment of the lesbian community was not only not interested in sex with women - but actively hostile to the idea that lesbians would have sexual relationships - it would seem that at that time there was a basis for that view. When you have individuals like Sheila Jeffreys as community leaders pushing a community towards neo-Victorian values (and her friends smashing up lesbian bars and the patrons for having the wrong type of lesbian sex) it creates an environment hostile to healthy sexuality. Luckily the community has started to move on, but certainly during the early 80's the lesbian community was not exactly pro sex
