At 12 noon on the steps of City Hall, Council Member Bill Perkins and a coalition of other legislators will introduce a NYC resolution to defend our civil liberties and civil rights. The public is invited to show its support. The resolution demands repeal of USA PATRIOT Act provisions that trample fundamental rights, directs the NYPD to refrain from subjecting NYC residents to military and secret detentions, directs public libraries to post warning signs giving notice to users that their book-borrowing records may be obtained by federal agents, directs the mayor to release the names of all residents detained since 9/11, and calls for an end to ethnic and religious profiling and spying on First Amendment-protected activities. The adoption of this measure will enable NYC to join the ranks of over 100 other municipalities which have passed similar resolutions. The event is being sponsored by the New York Bill of Rights Defense Campaign, a project of the New York Civil Liberties Union.
