On Tuesday Bob Straniere won the right to contest for Vito Fossella’s congressional seat on the GOP line. He will probably look back on that campaign as the easiest leg of his race. The Staten Island Advance reports that James Molinaro, the Borough President of Staten Island (a large part of this congressional district), is endorsing Democratic candidate Michael McMahon.
Previous SI Beep Guy Molinari, who earlier said that Straniere “brought nothing but grief to the Republican Party” in his 20-year political career, told the Advance Wednesday that “Straniere cannot win because of the negatives he carries,” and that he would probably vote for Conservative Party candidate Paul Atanasio in November.
Straniere can expect little help from his primary foe, Dr. Jamshad Wyne, who in announcing his resignation as the Staten Island GOP finance chairman this week assailed Straniere as a “racist candidate.”
And Carmine Morano, who expects final results to show he won 10 percent of the Republican primary vote via write-ins, is hanging in as the Independence Party candidate in the general election.
