Just in case you thought that Sufjan Stevens was the only arty, ambitious folkie out there, there’s also the sweet-voiced Los Angeles singer/songwriter Mr. Wood. He’s adept at performances on both the street corner and the concert hall, with collaborators ranging from women’s choirs to percussion ensembles to a Christmas lawn ornament. Also hailing from L.A., El-Haru Kuroi is a drum-heavy world-music-meets-post-punk trio—and hey, if there’s gotta be fusion music, shouldn’t we demand it be something as adventurous as this?
