Two Sandy-stricken restaurants are back on their feet after a brutal few months of rebuilding.
South Street Seaport has been barren since the hurricane but Fresh Salt on Beekman Street will be cooking its regular menu on Thursday, after being able to serve only drinks for the past week. Randazzo’s Clam Bar in Sheepshead Bay is ready for customers too.
Fresh Salt was closed until Dec. 19, but was able to open up the bar said NYC Reconnects. On Thursday they will become “fully operational” and will serve comfort food staples like meatloaf and mac and cheese. Like many in the area, Fresh Salt had no flood insurance and applied for grants from the Downtown Alliance, which is giving up to $20,000 to small businesses in Lower Manhattan in the wake of Sandy.
Paul Randazzo was aiming for a holiday season reopening, and just in time for the new year Randazzo’s Clam Bar is ready for customers.”Thank God,” he said, “it was a long few months.” Randazzo said while they were closed, they decided to make some changes to the menu: “Seafood’s very expensive. We’re going to add a few more affordable dishes, some more Italian dishes.” Manicotti and baked ziti are among the new options. The holiday lights are on and they’re hoping the threat of a snow storm doesn’t deter people from coming by. “We’re open and we’re going to try and make the neighborhood nicer.”
