On “Peal, Repeal” from the new Five Pedals Deep, the young pianist suggests a handful of ways to turn a wealth of skittish phrases into a fully-formed fantasia. It’s a triumph of locomotion, as are a handful of other pieces on the disc. After keeping pace with Lee Konitz on a series of wily improvs last year, a larger audience now has a glimpse of the fluid skills Tepfer brings to the keys. His hook-up with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Ted Poor is inventive enough to make that impression even deeper.
