With the release of Monomania, it’s now clear that Atlanta’s Deerhunter has an interest in remaking the Great American Songbook in its own blurred, scuffed image. The miracle is that between Bradford Cox’s genre multi-personality disorder and Lockett Pundt’s crystalline guitars, they’re somehow pulling it off without sacrificing anything unique about themselves. Stick around long enough, and they’ll synthesize hip-hop and folk into their diaspora.
