For more than a quarter century this Boston big band has brought a puckish attitude to a serious study of progressive charts for large ensemble, making their ever-expanding book of originals one of the most enjoyable canons around. They didn’t call one disc The Calculus Of Pleasure for nothing. Saxophonist-boss Russ Gershon uses a revolving door policy member-wise, and new blood is often making hay with his arrangements. Oddly, it’s rather rare they leave the Bean for the Apple, so don’t miss out.
