Damsel in Defense is more than just a company; it’s a mission-driven movement dedicated to equipping, empowering, and educating women about personal safety. Since its founding, the company has inspired a network of over 30,000 women across the U.S. to join in its efforts to create safer communities. Mindy Lin, the visionary behind Damsel in Defense, shares the story of how a personal experience led to a nationwide initiative.

For Mindy Lin, the seeds of Damsel in Defense were planted in her college years. “My dad sent me off to college with a bear-sized black and yellow pepper spray that never left my dorm,” Lin recalls. Years later, as a mother, she realized that many women lacked access to personal protection tools that felt approachable and effective. “Being in a mom’s group with over 50 women, I noticed so few carried protection. It wasn’t easily accessible, and it wasn’t aesthetic at all.”

Lin identified two major obstacles: the difficulty in finding personal safety products and the intimidating nature of using them. “A lot of the objections I heard were that women didn’t know where to purchase them or were scared of pepper-spraying or stunning themselves.” This insight sparked her mission to make personal protection “accessible, affordable, and adorable.” With experience selling products through home parties, Lin recognized an opportunity to overcome fear-based concerns by creating a supportive community where women could test and purchase safety tools together.

Damsel in Defense began with grassroots efforts, selling products in living rooms and at local events such as Christmas shows and runner’s expos. Lin recalls the overwhelming support she received from customers. “Every event I attended, there was always at least one woman who would approach me, share her story, and thank us for what we were doing.” These moments of connection fueled her determination to grow the movement.

The company’s product development process focuses on blending functionality and style. “We start with effective and necessary safety features, then mold them into something both functional and fashionable,” Lin explains. From pepper sprays with long-distance streams to stun guns with audible warnings, the products prioritize both prevention and practicality. Lin even personally tests each stun device. “I stun myself with every new device we carry, and my husband has subjected himself to the pepper spray twice.”

Damsel in Defense goes beyond providing tools; it also emphasizes education. “Our mission is to equip, empower, and educate,” Lin shares. The company hosts monthly sessions on topics such as domestic violence awareness, campus safety, and teen dating violence, ensuring customers understand not only how to use the products but also the importance of situational awareness.

Through its innovative Shield Technology, Damsel in Defense has also incorporated modern safety features, allowing users to alert preset contacts in emergencies. This emphasis on adaptability ensures the company remains responsive to evolving threats. Lin credits her extensive network of women across the country for providing valuable feedback and ideas.

Lin measures the impact of Damsel in Defense not only through the statistics but also through individual stories. One customer testimonial stands out: “A father purchased a stun device for his daughter. A week later, she had to use it when a man tried to attack her. She stunned him, contacted law enforcement, and the officer was so impressed that she said she would look into the products for her own family.”

Beyond the U.S., Damsel in Defense supports two international rescue homes that provide safety and resources for young girls rescued from sex trafficking. Lin describes the work as deeply rewarding. “To date, over 1,500 girls have been rescued and given hope and a future free of selling their bodies.” Her vision for the future includes opening rescue homes in additional countries, starting with the Philippines, where she first witnessed child trafficking.

Lin’s goals for Damsel in Defense are ambitious. “I want to make Damsel in Defense a household name. When a parent is sending their daughter off to college, I want us to be their first thought when it comes to safety.” She also hopes to expand conversations around personal protection, noting, “We started before the Me Too movement. A lot of good has come from that, but there is still so much work to be done.”

Through determination, compassion, and innovation, Mindy Lin has created a company that empowers women to protect themselves and others. By combining education, community, and cutting-edge tools, Damsel in Defense continues to make the world a safer place—one starfish at a time.
