ESG

by

Over three decades since the release of their debut EP, the South Bronx’s ESG are calling it quits after tonight’s show. The group, which was originally formed by four sisters and their friends in 1978, helped pioneer a funky, spacey, arty take on dance music that made perfect sense as disco began its decline. ESG’s influence can be heard in samples on records by the Beastie Boys, TLC, Wu-Tang and more, in covers by indie rockers Liars and Unrest, and in the music of Brooklyn’s 2000s post-punk groups like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Rapture. They will be missed. With Ava Luna and DJ Spinna.
