FISTS OF FURY

by

The Golden Gloves tournament is still a great way for young athletes to learn a lot more than boxing skills through the competition, which started in 1923. With the help of thousands of volunteers including coaches, trainers, and counselors, young men and women (since the early 1990s) develop personal discipline and athletic skills as they train and compete in tournaments that often carry them to the Pan-Am Games and the Olympics. The finals tonight offer a terrific chance to see boxing in what may be its purest form — no flashy entourages or big money purses, just skilled boxing and unmatched intensity in the ring for the love of the sport and, maybe, a chance to make it big. Who knows? You may see the next Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, or Muhammad Ali, Golden Gloves champs all in their hometowns.
