GOTTA HAVE FAITH

by

An operatic antidote to the Book of Mormon, composer Nico Muhly and librettist Stephen Karam’s new music-theater, Dark Sisters, takes a less uproarious look at the Latter-day Saints and the plural marriages that some of its members still practice—as well as the conflicts between personal and religious freedoms that the custom encourages. This chamber opera occurs in the aftermath of a government raid on a political sect. With the men detained and the children removed, the women who remain must explore the consequences of this intrusion—even as one begins to imagine an escape from her clan, to say nothing of those braids and drab long-sleeve dresses. Rebecca Taichman directs this sister wives’ act.

Tuesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Nov. 9. Continues through Nov. 19, 2011
