Edgar G. Ulmer’s first Yiddish talkie, adapted from a well-known play by Peretz Hirshbein and shot on a New Jersey farm for less than $10,000, was the most lyrical and bucolic of Ulmer movies—a Jewish pastoral all the more poignant for its economy of means.
