Deep Throat’s tag line asked, “How far does a girl have to go to untangle her tingle?” Pretty far, as it happens. This mob-financed flick about unusual clitoral stimulation earned hundreds of millions of dollars and numerous obscenity trials. David Bertolino’s new play, The Deep Throat Sex Scandal, examines the ground-breaking, conservative-baiting 1972 film and the money, fame, and court battles that it generated. Its characters include Linda Lovelace, Harry Reems, and Alan Dershowitz. While one wouldn’t necessarily expect to see hardcore porn on the Bleecker Street stage, Ron Jeremy is billed as a creative consultant. Can a play receive an NC-17 rating? Jerry Douglas directs the (XXX?) action.
