The cackling free-bop that marks his playing with Mostly Other People Do the Killing is a good way to view the wily alto saxophonist’s overall approach, but he paints from a palette with several hues. Last year’s The Observer found him waxing lyrical and comparatively trad, and his duet disc with drummer Mike Pride is a tumbleweed of engaging expressionism. On this pool hall gig, sassy trumpeter Etienne Charles is Irabagon’s front-line foil, and the chosen rhythm section sounds like it knows how to throw a few punches.
