Prison isn’t all weightlifting and cable TV. The PEN American Center has been mentoring prisoners on the skills of written expression as part of their Prison Writing Program for more than 3 decades, and its annual writing competition gets more than 30 entries per day from prisons around the country. Tonight, the Greene Space’s NEXT New York Conversation series hosts Breakout: Voices From Inside, which features readings of these contest entries. A slew of celebs, including John Turturro, Eric Bogosian, and Lemon Anderson, are among those who will bring these little known talents’ manuscripts out from behind bars to the public.
