MER-MADNESS

by

All the hubbub about what’s up with Coney Island isn’t really warranted this Saturday when hundreds of highly adorned mer-people once again make their way through the South Brooklyn beach town for one of New York’s most beloved summer traditions, the Mermaid Parade. Costumes, usually self-made, are a must at this sea-mythology-themed procession. The best are crowned “Queen Mermaid” and “King Neptune” and will, no doubt, make appearances after the procession at their version of Homecoming—the Mermaid Ball, where sideshow freaks and beautiful burlesquers mix and mingle. It’s business as usual; Thor won’t know what hit him.
