The Gods do giveth with String. Brainstorm Records and Broadway Licensing Global have teamed together to drop the, respective, release of a six-song original studio cast recording EP and also open up theatrical licensing for theatres worldwide.  These types of dual announcements are rare.  One usually comes before the other.  But given high praise for, String, with its singular combination of mythical and modern storytelling, the musical has enchanted audiences and is now ready to find its standing midst the stars—as if pulled from the outer limits by Hermes himself.

String interlinks mythos and modernity: exiled Fates labor among mortals, chancing celestial steadiness for forbidden love.  The story, by book writer Sarah Hammond (Green Girl; Pete the Cat) and composer Adam Gwon (Ordinary Days; Scotland, PA), follows three goddesses, known as Fates, as they spin, measure, and snip the strings of life for humans on earth. When the eldest sister falls in love with a mortal, she steals her beloved’s string to keep him at her side, threatening the fabric of the universe.

Since launching into the theatrical stratosphere at the Village Theatre in Washington, String has gone on to garner a slew of awards, including the prestigious Richard Rodgers Award and the Frederick Loewe Award.  Theatrical licensing is now available for professional and non-professional productions.

Gwon describes the score as “a mash-up of contemporary, character-driven musical theater writing, and epic, choral ensemble work.” Hammond adds, “with three strong female characters at the center, a flexible ensemble, a good dose of humor, and some stunning ensemble work, it makes a great show for theater companies or schools.”

With an album featuring original voices of Broadway stars, including Ciara Renée (Frozen), Mary Kate Morrissey (Wicked), and recorded at the legendary Power Station studios—where the likes of Bob Dylan and Madonna have laid tracks—cast recording fans and theatre producers can, finally, bask in the experience of what it’s like to echo the timeless tales of the gods.
