There are Middletowns in New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Ohio, and several other states. Will Eno’s award-winning new play, Middletown, which opens the Vineyard Theatre season, does not reveal its zip code, so it might take place in any of them. Or none. Like his mentor, Edward Albee, Eno is a writer both coruscating and mordant, his jaundiced worldview contrasting attractively with his linguistic playfulness. He’ll turn those talents to this study of just folks, particularly a friendship that develops between a longtime resident and a newcomer to the town. Georgia Engel, Linus Roache, Pete Simpson, and Johanna Day play its various inhabitants, while the wonderfully sensitive director Ken Rus Schmoll organizes the civic duties.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 3 p.m.; Tuesdays, 7 p.m. Starts: Oct. 13. Continues through Nov. 21, 2010
