After a little nudging from Manhattan borough president Gale Brewer, New York City government agreed to host a ticker-tape (OK, it’s just shredded paper in this modern age) parade for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, which coasted to its third World Cup win on Sunday, July5, defeating Japan 5-2 in the World Cup final.
On Friday, a twelve-float parade traveled from the Battery up to City Hall on Broadway. Mayor Bill De Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray, national team coach Jill Ellis, and others stood alongside Megan Rapinoe, the inventive midfielder and one of the engines of the side, who held up the World Cup trophy for cheering crowds.
