OUT IN THE OPEN

by

The U.S. Open claims the largest attendance of any of the tennis world’s majors, last year drawing more than 713,000 in 26 sessions. It became the first Grand Slam tournament to award equal prize money to men and women in 1973, a past inequality that seems absurd, now that superstars like the Williams sisters draw such a crowd. With the qualifying rounds now behind us, the tournament is heating up. Enjoy the last days of summer with a grounds pass for the first week, which will get you in for the day to all courts and stadium matches except the major ones, at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Unlike baseball, if a ball lands in your lap, you are expected to throw it back.
