Souad Massi+Simon Shaheen

Mark the 50th anniversary of Algeria’s independence with a screening of The Battle of Algiers (playing this week at Film Forum) and the first appearance in eight years by politically engaged singer-songwriter Souad Massi. Joan Baez meets Fairuz in Massi’s multilingual repertoire, which ranges from songs of resistance to American country music sung in Arabic. Shaheen leads an energetic group that has recently been exploring music of the “second Arab renaissance.”
