SWEET ‘N’ LOW

by

Juana Molina, from Buenos Aires, has been playing music for longer than she has worked as a comedic actress, yet nearly everything written about her still mentions her background in television because it’s so unlikely: Imagine if Chan Marshall of Cat Power had been on Laverne & Shirley before she started writing songs about drinking and depression. Molina makes very serious electro-folk records that suggest Björk fronting Fairport Convention, or perhaps Feist collaborating with the Books; she records on her own at home, which gives her delicate yet well-crafted music an exceptionally intimate quality, as if you’re hearing her think out loud. Molina’s latest, Un Dia, came out last year and has not yet worn out its welcome.
