The epitome of an enthralling jazz mainstreamer, he’s regularly cited for grace and poignancy. But the pianist likes to throw some grooves into that shimmer, and when he writes for the reed ‘n’ brass front line of Tony Malaby and Ralph Alessi, some rough ‘n’ tumble comes out. Check their “Miss B” for a glimpse, and credit Hersch for his smarts in choosing drummers.
