Dir. Robert Rossen (1961).
Solid and moody, this “adult” drama provided old lefty Robert Rossen a comeback of sorts; it also gave Paul Newman a memorable turn as a beautiful loser, the virtuoso pool shark Fast Eddie. There’s a great cameo by Jackie Gleason as Eddie’s nemesis Minnesota Fats and a terrifying turn by George C. Scott as his banker.
