Lubitsch’s first talkie was a landmark. Love Parade was first movie musical with integrated songs, as well as a star-making vehicle for Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald as a lusty pair of Ruritarian aristos—and Lubitsch too, initiating the succession of sophisticated comedies he’d make at Paramount.
