Like a Rauschenberg collage, John Cage’s Atlas Elipticalis for 86 musicians will be performed simultaneously with the composer’s Winter Music for two pianos. For the former work, Cage also superimposed musical staves over the eponymous star chart, linking note amplitudes to brightness. This concert kick off “Beyond Cage,” a wonderful month-long celebration of the composer’s centennial. Also: Christian Marclay’s Shuffle, in which 75 cards adorned with photographs of musical symbols in real life are distributed randomly among as many musicians.
