Ty Dolla $ign sings, writes, and produces, has a premium pedigree (his dad was in Lakeside, of “Fantastic Voyage” fame), and is proficient with all the instruments and sounds in the r&b/electro/funk constellation. In short, he’s a prodigious talent whose emergence hasn’t yet been circumscribed by mainstream machinery. Despite his frankness, however, he doesn’t get deep like the Ocean. The recent Beach House mixtapes rely extensively on Auto-Tune—pitch-correction software developed from the same mathematical modeling that allowed wildcatters to explore new substrata with less actual digging—to explore the womb of figurative possibilities offered in depersonalized groupie intercourse.
