The Book of Sarah (Palin)

Strafing the Palin record

THE $12.5 MILLION sports complex and hockey rink that is the lasting monument to Palin's two terms as Wasilla mayor is also a monument to the kind of insider politics that dismays Americans of both parties. Six months before Palin stepped down as mayor in October 2002, the city awarded nearly a half-million-dollar contract to design the biggest project in Wasilla history to Kumin Associates. Blase Burkhart was the Kumin architect on the job—the son of Roy Burkhart, who is frequently described as a "mentor" of Palin and was head of the local Republican Party (his wife, June, who also advised Palin, is the national committeewoman). Asked if the contract was a favor, Roy Burkhart, who contributed to her campaign in the same time frame that his son got the contract, said: "I really don't know." Palin then named Blase Burkhart to a seven-member builder-selection committee that picked Howdie Inc., a mostly residential contractor owned at the time by Howard Nugent. Formally awarded the contract a couple of weeks after Palin left office, Nugent has donated $4,000 to Palin campaigns. Two competitors protested the process that led to Nugent's contract. Burkhart and Nugent had done at least one project together before the complex—and have done several since.

A list of subcontractors on the job, obtained by the Voice, includes many with Palin ties. One was Spenard Builders Supply, the state's leading supplier of wood, floor, roof, and other "pre-engineered components." In addition to being a sponsor of Todd Palin's snow-machine team that has earned tens of thousands for the Palin family, Spenard hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004. When the Palins began building a new family home off Lake Lucille in 2002—at the same time that Palin was running for lieutenant governor and in her final months as mayor—Spenard supplied the materials, according to Antoine Bricks, who works in its Wasilla office. Spenard actually filed a notice "of its right to assert a lien" on the deed for the Palin property after contracting for labor and materials for the site. Spenard's name has popped up in the trial of Senator Stevens—it worked on the house that is at the center of the VECO scandal as well.

More About

Todd Palin told Fox News that he built the two-story, 3,450-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath, wood house himself, with the help of contractors he described as "buddies." As mayor, Sarah Palin blocked an effort to require the filing of building permits in the wide-open city, and there is no public record of who the "buddies" were. The house was built very near the complex, on a site whose city purchase led to years of unsuccessful litigation and, now, $1.3 million in additional costs, with a law firm that's also donated to Palin collecting costly fees from the city.

Dorwin and Joanne Smith, the principals of complex subcontractor DJ Excavation & Development, have donated $7,100 to Palin and her allied candidate Charlie Fannon (Joanne is a Palin appointee on the state Board of Nursing). Sheldon Ewing, who owns another complex subcontractor, Weld Air, has donated $1,300, and PN&D, an engineering firm on the complex, has contributed $699.

Ewing was one of the few sports-complex contractors, aside from Spenard, willing to address the question of whether he worked on the house as well, but he had little to say: "I doubt that it occurred, but if it did indirectly, how would I know anyhow?" The odd timing of Palin's house construction—it was completed two months before she left City Hall and while she and Todd Palin were campaigning statewide for the first time—raises questions, especially considering its synergy with the complex.

Salon's David Talbot recently visited the complex, which, he said, resembled "a huge airplane hangar" so far away from the city's center that kids can't bike or walk there. It's adorned by a plaque commemorating Palin. Even as a governor, she is still such a champion of the complex—which loses money every year—that she just steered state funding for a new kitchen to it.

It is incredible that this highly revealing article was never tweeted!! It is time to revisit the corruption in Sarah Palin's past. Actually, it is long overdue. Page 5 of the article is about the Wasilla Sports Complex, now known as the Curtis D. Menard Sports Center, and the Palin's residence on Lake Lucille. Here is further information about the 'House that Todd built': http://palingates.blogspot.com/search/label/housegate The indoor running track on the second floor of the sports complex is dedicated to Menard's son, Curtis Menard Jr. http://palingates.blogspot.com/2010/01/track-palin-and-curtis-menard-jr-new.html How did Sarah and Todd acquire all their property and expensive toys (plane, boat, snowmobiles, 4-wheelers, etc) long before any lucrative book deal?? http://palingates.blogspot.com/search/label/property%20taxgate The "lamestream media" has only scratched the surface when it comes exposing Sarah Palin.

All the Palins' attorney has to do to end speculation about the corruption issue is simply release the names of Todd's anonymous contractor "buddies" who built his half-million-dollar lakeside house down the road from the Wasilla Sports Complex worksite. SBS, a major arena contractor, also sponsors Todd's racing team. See: http://notionscapital.wordpress.com/2008/10/15/the-house-that-todd-built/

It is difficult not to trench unto pure misogyny when dissing the abysmal Sarah Palin, but let he or she cast the first stone who would not also clamber aboard the US political fantasy factory machine for a ride, if only at the behest of a quasi-senile desperado, and further, just for the pure fun of it all. I warned before about the bona fides of this nomination. The very same people who brought us Clarence Thomas as a cruel racist joke upon affirmative action, brought us Sarah Palin as an even crueler sexist joke upon those seeking sexual equality. Both were utterly unqualified, but for their skin and genitalia. Both were intellectually challenged. Does the name George Bush ring any bells? And both nominations exploited legitimate concerns regarding racism and sexism in order to advance their own agenda. The source of these unpalatable candidates always seems to be those Superficiallly Protestant Ethically-challenged Republican Males (aka SPERM) who have always monopolized the US government and treated it like their own personal property. It is a toy with which they both self-enrich (Who wants $700 billion!?), and self-amuse themselves (Its 'election' time!). Sarah Palin tells us all we need to know about the US political system: it is irretrievably bankrupt of any and all sense, all principles, and all integrity, and no amount of money or lipstick will hide the fact that the Great American Lardmass, in its indifference to the slaughter and torture perpetrated in its name, and its benign resigned tolerance of its own enslavement, has itself become absolutely corrupt.

Will the Ted Stevens jury verdict stimulate any further investigationsinto Sarah Palin's home construction?

It must be very nice to live in a world where everything can be perceived as good and evil. Good is, I guess, Democrats and liberal causes, and evil is Republicans and especially anyone who sees the merits of drilling for domestic oil and natural gas. The writer of this article is really no different from the fundamentalist Christian who sees the world as good and evil based on adherence to doctrine that doesn't require careful thought, just zeal. For someone to support oil and natural gas drilling does not make them corrupt. To adhere to a viewpoint that sometimes coincides with an industry viewpoint does not make an individual or organization (the IOGCC) an industry lackey. I must conclude that articles such as this are written only to incite those who've already sipped the kool-aid. It is not the thoughtful piece that aims to provide new information that can inform an enlighten anyone but the rapid fanatic. I write a blog that attempts to talk about things in a rational way, particularly energy policy. I understand and try to communicate that things are complex, nuanced and far from black and white. If anyone's interested my writings can be found at www.whatshouldbe.com. I would be happy to engage in a thoughtful debate about energy policy with anyone. Rational energy policy will require everyone to learn more than they currently know and rethink stale assumptions. This author makes some very stale assumptions indeed. I am sure you have heard some of this already- but I am a democrat- I work for the architecture firm in question. This report has no factual or local reality. On MSNBC the author said he had no factual sources and that it was all heresay and based on what he could not find out via phone calls".. wasilla has never had building permits, as many small towns do not. Spenard builders is a very large, actually multi-state, supply house- they happen to do a LOT of our projects, and everybody elses. The site was choosen based on the land Wasilla had availble. The building is like a "large aircraft hanger" (disputable) because of a tight budget and the way you build small town large sports facility (i.e. column free on the sport's fields).. The architect was choosen by a commitee, and the 'architect' in question was one part of a large firm that regulary competes and wins and loses at these kind of large government projects. I feel that this report admitedly has no basis in fact- it appears to be all speculation.. and even as an Obama supporter I find your cover offensive and fueling of the kind of negative race we have come to expect for our presidency. If you aspire to be more than a neighborhood rag I hope you start to follow at least some basic premises of journalism and not pure speculation and commentary.

  • Jane 10/14/2008 4:04:00 PM

Thank you so much for providing additional proof of Palin's illegal activities. It is obviously she had the complex built right next to her new home for her family instead of a proper location where the small population can enjoy this olympic size complex! It is so clear she interfered with the the requirement to file for a building permit in order to hide the connection between the contracting company for the complex and her home. Talk about misuse of government money to build yourself a home and a rink. This is unbelievable! The MSM should pick this up! Thanks to Olbermann having you as a guest!

so, Palin gave a lucrative contract to a friend and paid them more in taxpayer money than the bids of two other contractors who bid but were ignored, and then abused her power to get some land, and used taxpayer dollars left over to build herself a house? that's perfectly reasonable American politics. That's reason 1 million and 1 that I'm voting for Ralph Nader, and so should you... http://www.votenader.org

A few comments regarding the Palin article.Vic Vickers was not elected because he is a carpetbagger. He moved to Alaska in January of this year.No matter how much money he put into the election he had no credibility. Also there is no piece of properety known as Cook Inlet.Cook Inlet is a body of water such as New York Harbor or Barnegat Bay.Otherwise an interesting article

Its sad to see the extent to which America's so called journalists have lost every last shred of fairness that they may once have had. Journalism is now truly dead replaced by propaganda. Unfortunately most people don't want to read propaganda. Even people who agree with it.

Right on to Jim Isaacs; however, the concept is derivative of a counterculture idea realized in a poster almost 40 years ago: a depiction of then-President Nixon on a chopper wearing a leather jacket and a U.S.-flag themed helmet, a la Peter Fonda/Captain America, and Vice President Spiro Agnew, with long hair wrapped in a headband and with a scraggly beard, wearing a fringed jacket, in the style of "Willie"/Dennis Hopper riding another bike, both with joints Bogarted in the sides of their pie-holes as they tore down the highway.
