Since her debut in 1978, Karole Armitage has gained a reputation as the “punk ballerina” for a tendency to choreograph classical pieces to loud, fast, and probably authority-hating music. But her methods have consistently proved more calculating than the fondness for anarchy usually associated with the former discipline. She has since tackled relativity, string theory, and geometry way beyond your standard undergrad-level vectors. Tonight, the suggested heir to both George Balanchine and Merce Cunningham returns to New York with Mechanics of the Dance Machine, an exploration of fractals, Walsh functions, intimacy, and voyeurism, among other sexy things. Follow the interactive pathways created by lighting designer Clifton Taylor in order to sit, stand, walk, and basically loiter any way you see fit as dancers perform a mix of pointe and non-pointe to a score that ranges from classical concertos to a modern electronic symphony by DJ Gabriel Prokofiev.
