Annette Funicello, RIP

The queen of the Mickey Mouse Club, the singer of “Pineapple Princess,” and the star of Beach Blanket movies, Annette Funicello was a small, dark bundle of good cheer whom America anointed as a sort of human good luck charm ever since she started as a child star.

The cheeriness covered up some of the darker realities of the 1950s and ’60s, but it was always entertaining, and Annette was one of those well liked people whose persona seemed to actually match their real selves.

She has died at 70, after a long struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Many people might well be more upset by this than by Thatcher’s death, but it would be tacky to compare.
