DEATH BECOMES THEM

Sub Pop–endorsed yelpers the Obits are New York’s greatest West Coast band, a blast of sunny harmonies, hardcore gnash, and jittery garage-rawk energy. Frontman Rick Froberg already has a handful of legendary bands under his belt—Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes—and while the Obits are a little less feral (Froberg is sick of hurting his throat, so doesn’t yell as much), they’ve still lost none of their passion and churn. Their new album, Moody, Standard and Poor, is a 12-song beast that could have been a mid-fi no-bull rock burner in 1981, 1991, or 2001. Opening are local hopefuls the Sundelles, who share some of the Obits’ cassette-quality clamor, but have hooks that are as sweet and long-lasting as a chalky mouth full of cupcake on a summer day.
