L’AVENUE Derm Helps Survivors Reclaim Their Bodies, One Mark at a Time

Some wounds are invisible. Others are inked into skin – reminders of a past no one asked for, marks that speak of pain, coercion, and survival. For survivors of sex trafficking, domestic violence, and gang-related abuse, these tattoos or scars are not expressions of identity. They are shackles – symbols forced upon them by control, violence, and fear.

At L’AVENUE Derm, healing takes on a new form. Since opening on July 1, the clinic has quietly launched Unmarking the Past, a powerful initiative offering free tattoo removal for survivors of trauma. But this is not cosmetic work. This is about restoring dignity. About giving survivors the chance to reclaim not just their skin – but their stories.

“This is not about image correction,” says the Director of Operations. “It’s about liberation. We are helping people take back what was taken from them – ownership of their own lives.”

A New Beginning, Not Just a Procedure

The tattoos targeted through Unmarking the Past are often linked to branding: names, symbols, or coded messages etched by abusers, traffickers, or gangs. They linger as constant reminders of subjugation, even long after escape.

Through this program, L’AVENUE DERM offers 12 survivors each year the opportunity to remove these marks, quietly and without fanfare. It’s a conscious choice to serve fewer people with deeper care – ensuring that privacy, trust, and emotional safety are never compromised.

There are no testimonials required. Just one-on-one conversations. Discreet screenings. And the simple but profound message: you are not what happened to you.

Scars, Silence, and the Right to Heal

L’AVENUE Derm’s commitment to healing goes far beyond tattoo removal. Through its Gift of Expertise initiative, the clinic offers pro bono scar treatment for individuals living with visible reminders of domestic violence and trauma. But this care isn’t about erasing the past – it’s about giving survivors the power to reclaim how their story is seen, and how it continues.

It’s not just skin that’s being treated – it’s identity, agency, and the right to move forward without shame.

The Gift of Expertise program also recognizes another often-silenced experience: the physical toll of motherhood. Each year, six mothers facing financial hardship are selected to receive full facial rejuvenation, in acknowledgment of the deep, and often invisible, changes that come with childbirth, trauma, and years of selfless caregiving.

This offering was born from a deeply personal realization: that meaningful support for mothers’ well-being is heartbreakingly rare.

“Motherhood should never mean losing your sense of self. This is our way of saying – you deserve to feel whole again,” shared the founder’s wife, whose own post-childbirth experience helped shape the program.

The True Purpose of Aesthetics

L’AVENUE Derm’s experts use aesthetic medicine to restore peace. Each procedure is an act of reverence – for what a survivor has endured, and for who they are becoming. This is not a rescue. It is not performance. It is care – quiet, unconditional, and deeply personal.

“Sometimes, healing begins with someone gently saying, ‘You don’t have to carry this anymore,’” say the founders. “That’s what we’re here to offer.”

Every session is a step toward reclaiming identity, agency, and hope. Because sometimes, helping someone remove what was never theirs to bear is the most beautiful form of restoration. L’AVENUE Derm is redefining what aesthetic care can be. Not vanity. Not luxury. But a path back to self. And a way forward.
