LE SWEDE, C’EST CHIC

Ikea, Volvo, Absolut, and, er, Abba: It seems the Swedes have got the design thing down pat. But a new exhibition from the Swedish Institute reveals how the Scandinavian country is now giving the fashion industry a green makeover without forfeiting aesthetics. Eco Chic-Towards Sustainable Swedish Fashion at Scandinavia House features Swedish designers who follow responsible sourcing, trade, production, and labor practices showing that, once and for all, fashion and nature can co-exist. No itchy hemp here. Think luxe coats and silky gowns made of organic cotton, wool, tweed, and recycled plastic bottles. Designers include Anja Hynynen, Pia Anjou, Camilla Norrback, Dem Collective, Nudie Jeans, Swedish Hasbeens, Reflective Circle, Julian Red, Righteous Fashion, and Zion.
