Though the great American dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham died a year ago today, his profound influence on modern dance will be felt for generations to come. Last year, dancers from his namesake company performed a sensational eulogy to Cunningham at the River to River Festival. Now, five choreographers are returning to the festival for a heartfelt tribute on the anniversary of his death titled We Give Ourselves Away at Every Moment: An EVENT for Merce, inspired by Cunningham’s site-specific choreographic works he called “Events.” Lucinda Childs, Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall, Jon Kinzel, and Faye Driscoll will present new dances created for the occasion as well as material from previous works. The program is curated and produced by Annie-B Parson and William Knapp and features musical performances by David Eggar (cello), Geoff Gersh (guitar), and Kotchy (laptop).
