Based on a true story, Lolita Chakrabarti’s Red Velvet takes you back to the Theatre Royal in London in 1833, where Edmund Kean, regarded as the greatest actor of his time, has collapsed while playing Othello. The only one who can save the show? Ira Aldridge, a young black American actor who takes the stage while protests rage nearby against the abolition of the Slavery Act. Adrian Lester, who played Aldridge in the Tricycle Theatre’s acclaimed production, stars.
